Understanding Timber Treatment Options in South Africa: CCA H2, H3, H4 and Vacsol Azure (Trade Guide)

When selecting structural timber for a project, one of the most important factors to consider is the type of preservative treatment to choose. In South Africa, timber treatment plays a critical role in protecting pine against fungal decay, termites, wood-boring insects, and harsh environmental conditions. Different treatment classes are designed for different applications, ranging from interior roof trusses to exposed outdoor structures and even marine environments.

At Saplings Timber Trading in Cape Town, we supply a broad range of South African pine products in various treatment options to suit structural, industrial, furniture, and decking applications for the wholesale and trade market, supplying retailers, manufacturers, contractors, and builders across the Western and Eastern Cape.

Blog quick read:

Timber treatment should match the environment and risk level. Untreated pine is susceptible to moisture, fungi, and insect attack, so preservative treatment improves durability and helps meet building and structural requirements. CCA hazard classes are used widely in South Africa: H2 is common for roof structures and interior structural use, H3 is for exterior above-ground use like decking and pergolas, and H4 and above are for ground contact and severe exposure. Vacsol Azure is often chosen where a cleaner appearance is preferred, while still offering protection against insects and fungal attack. Saplings Timber Trading can advise on the correct treatment and supply suitable pine products for trade and wholesale projects.

Why Timber Treatment Matters

South African pine is widely used in construction due to its affordability, strength, and sustainability. However, untreated pine is naturally susceptible to moisture, fungi, and insect attack. Preservative treatment extends the lifespan of timber dramatically and ensures compliance with building and structural standards.

The treatment required depends entirely on where and how the timber will be used. Timber used indoors in dry conditions requires far less protection than timber exposed to rain, soil contact, or permanent moisture. This is where the South African H-class treatment system comes in.

Understanding CCA Hazard Classes (H1 – H6)

CCA stands for Copper Chrome Arsenate, a pressure treatment system commonly used throughout South Africa. The “H” classification refers to the hazard level the timber is designed to withstand.

When timber is treated, it is classified according to both the penetration and retention of the preservative within the wood. Penetration refers to how deeply the treatment chemical has soaked into the timber, while retention measures the amount of preservative retained in the wood, usually expressed in kilograms per cubic metre (kg/m³). Together, these factors determine the timber’s durability and suitability for different environments and applications.

CCA H1 – Interior Dry Applications

H1 treatment is intended for timber used indoors in dry conditions where there is a low risk of fungal decay but possible insect attack.

Typical applications include:

  • Interior furniture framing

  • Ceiling battens

  • Dry internal joinery

H1 timber is not suitable for exterior exposure or wet conditions. You won’t find timber treated to H1 in South Africa anymore due to the very small price and characteristic difference from H2.

CCA H2 – Roof Structures and Interior Structural Use

H2 is one of the most common structural treatments used in South Africa. It is designed for interior structural applications protected from weather but still requiring protection against insects and limited moisture exposure.

Common applications include:

  • Roof trusses

  • Wall framing

  • Structural roof timber

  • Interior construction

At Saplings Timber Trading, we stock a wide range of S.A. Pine products available in CCA H2 treatment, including structural S5 timber and industrial-grade pine.

CCA H3 – Exterior Above-Ground Use

H3 treatment is designed for exterior applications above ground where timber is exposed to weather and moisture.

Typical applications include:

  • Decking

  • Pergolas

  • Carports

  • Exterior cladding

  • Fascias

H3-treated timber offers significantly improved resistance against rot, fungi, and insect attack in outdoor conditions. Our in-house manufactured S.A. Pine decking at Saplings Timber Trading is supplied in CCA H3 treatment to ensure long-term outdoor durability.

CCA H4, H5 and H6 – Heavy Duty Ground and Water Contact Treatments

Although less commonly stocked by standard merchants, higher hazard classes are designed for severe exposure conditions.

H4 – Ground Contact
Suitable for:

  • Fence posts

  • Landscaping timber

  • Retaining walls

  • Timber in direct soil contact

H5 – Fresh Water and Ground Exposure
Typically used for:

  • Heavy retaining structures

  • Agricultural poles

  • Industrial outdoor applications

H6 – Marine Exposure and Ground Exposure
Designed for extremely harsh environments such as:

  • Jetty structures

  • Marine piling

  • Saltwater exposure

These higher treatment classes contain increased preservative retention levels to withstand constant moisture and biological attack.

What is Vacsol Treatment?

Vacsol Azure is another popular timber treatment option available in South Africa and is commonly used where a cleaner appearance and lower chemical retention are preferred.

Unlike traditional green CCA treatment, Vacsol-treated timber typically has a lighter, cleaner appearance, which makes it popular for:

  • Interior exposed beams

  • Furniture components

  • Decorative timber

  • Joinery applications

Vacsol treatment provides protection against insects and fungal attack while maintaining a more aesthetically pleasing finish for visible timber applications. Vacsol Azure can be classified with the CCA H2 class.

At Saplings Timber Trading S.A. Pine range, we offer Vacsol Azure treatment options across various pine grades, including structural, industrial, and furniture grade pine. All our laminated SA Pine beams come pre-treated with Vacsol Azure treatment.

Other Timber Treatment Options

Beyond CCA and Vacsol, there are several other preservative systems used globally and locally, depending on project requirements.

Boron Treatment
Boron-treated timber is commonly used for interior structural applications due to its effectiveness against insects and fungi. However, it is generally not suitable for exterior exposure because the treatment can leach out when exposed to moisture.

Tan E Treatment
Tan E is often used on decking and exterior timber where a more natural brown appearance is preferred over the traditional green CCA finish.

Choosing the Correct Treatment for Your Project

Selecting the correct timber treatment depends on several factors:

  • Interior vs exterior use

  • Exposure to moisture

  • Ground contact

  • Structural requirements

  • Desired appearance

  • Expected lifespan

Using the wrong treatment can significantly reduce the lifespan of timber and lead to costly maintenance or replacement later on.
